KOLKATA: A Calcutta High Court judge on Friday recused himself from a case after a lawyer approached him in his chamber and tried to influence the proceedings. When Justice Shekhar B Saraf mentioned the incident in court, senior counsel Harish Salve said he, too, would not appear in the case any more.
In a one-line order, Justice Saraf said, “Due to circumstances which are quite unfortunate, I release this matter on my personal ground.” He, however, did not mention the lawyer’s name.
Justice Saraf said it would have been a privilege to hear Salve’s arguments but someone from his side had approached him on the case.
Justice Saraf added it was “very unfortunate” that people believed they could approach judges on cases and someone could even walk into a judge’s chamber to influence him. He said he was so shocked that he didn’t say anything at the time.
Salve, who was appearing online, immediately termed the incident as “obnoxious” and “the worst possible thing that could happen” and told the judge he would not appear in the case after this.
