The drizzle occasionally intensified in some parts of the city even as the neighbouring districts of Howrah, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and Nadia, too, received rain throughout the day.
The city received 13 mm rain till 5.30 pm on Monday. The rain turned heavier in the evening in central and south Kolkata. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the rain may continue till Wednesday but lose intensity as the circulation moves away. “The rain may continue till Wednesday but will not be heavy. Subsequently, the weather could turn dry,” said deputy director-general of RMC Sanjib Bandopadhyay.
While a heavy rain alert was issued on Monday for Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Jhargram, East and West Midnapore, spells of intense rain could occur at one or two places in Kolkata and its neighbouring districts on Tuesday. The rain could intensify in south Bengal on Wednesday, while a few places in Birbhum and Murshidabad may receive showers.
A heavy rain alert has been issued for north Bengal too.
On Monday, the coastal districts of East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas received heavy rain. “The rain will continue at these places on Tuesday and we have issued an alert for fishermen asking them not to venture into the sea. There could be gusty winds at 30-40 km/hr. We apprehend damage to standing crops, unstable buildings and advise people to stay indoors during thunderstorms,” said Bandopadhyay.
