KOLKATA: A 21-year-old youth from Shyambazar, who had been rebuked by a 35-year-old woman living in the same area for not wearing his mask properly and making advances towards her, retaliated by stalking her for weeks and molested her inside an auto on Tuesday morning.
Timely intervention by Kaushik Chakraborty, a traffic sergeant and an officer of Jorabagan traffic guard, posted at Girish Park crossing, helped cops nab the youth, Pintu Pramanik.
A few weeks ago, the woman, a private firm employee, had refrained from lodging a complaint against the youth after he followed her in the Shyampukur area.
On Tuesday, the accused followed the victim as she stepped out of her home. For the next few minutes, he passed lewd comments and made obscene gestures at her. With none coming forward to help the woman on the road, the accused became even more reckless and aggressive.
“When the complainant boarded an auto rickshaw at Girish Park crossing, Pintu even forcefully sat on her lap inside and outraged her modesty,” said joint CP (crime), Murlidhar Sharma.
“Around 12.30pm the woman reached out to me for help and she appeared to be in trouble. Instead of speaking, she pointing her fingers at the youth and I grabbed the accused. The woman told me that the accused had harassed her with lewd comments and gestures and he had been following her. I informed the control room and handed him over to cops,” said Chakraborty.
