My heart bleeds to see what Cyclone Amphan has done to Kolkata and its people. I didn’t have the heart to go beyond a few photographs of the aftermath. I can’t even begin to imagine what the affected must be going through. Kolkata will always hold a special place in my life because it is the city where my journey in the world of professional football kicked off. The Maidan, which I’m sure is in disarray now, is where I picked up so much about the sport. Those lessons have made me what I am today. But through all this, the one attribute that stands out, and that I have been witness to, is the passion that the people of Kolkata possess. And I’m certain that the city will spring back on its feet. The people of Kolkata know how to fight back.
The coronavirus pandemic has led to trying times for all of us. And to have a natural calamity hit you in the middle of a pandemic is only so much tougher, but not tough enough to break the human will. I hope we all will emerge as better people at the end of this battle. Let’s make empathy an important part of our lives, and let’s help each other as much as we can for a better world.
