KOLKATA: The Enforcement Branch of Kolkata Police arrested two traders for allegedly trying to sell the rice meant for public distribution system during raids at Muchipara and Entally in central Kolkata on Friday. Cops seized around 1,000 kg rice from the duo’s possession.
According to DC (EB) Biswajit Ghosh, the first raid was carried out at a godown near a shop at Entally Market on AJC Bose Road.
“We found 13 jute sacks full of rice. Each of the sacks weighed around 50kg. We arrested Triloki Roy (60), a resident of Phoolbagan and seized the rice. He had hoarded the PDS rice, but was planning to sell it in the open market for steep prices,” he said.
At Muchipara, the police arrested Akhilesh Shaw (48), a resident of Madan Bera Lane for storing and selling PDS rice illegally. Cops have seized around seven bags full of rice, each weighing 50kg. There were stamps of the Bengal government, Punjab government and Karnataka government on these bags , according to the police.
